Are You Making It Hard to Buy From You? Mapping Your Strategic Guest Journey

Most trade business owners view their company from the inside out, focusing on overhead, inventory, and labor schedules. But your customer only cares about one thing: how easy it is to solve their problem.

I’m Jeff Secrease, and I use Revenue Diagnostics to help owners bridge the gap between how they run their business and how their customers actually experience it. By mapping your Strategic Guest Journey to the LAPS framework, we can identify exactly where you are making it difficult for people to give you money.

They care about their experience from the first moment they hear about you until long after they’ve paid you.

That journey lines up with LAPS:

Let’s walk it from their point of view.

Why Most Customer Journeys are Broken

❌ When it’s broken: You have ‘friction points’ at every stage, hard-to-find contact info, slow follow-up, confusing quotes, and no post-job communication. This leads to a low Profit Per Job and a calendar full of one-off customers.

✅ When it works: You create a seamless path from Awareness to Advocacy. Every touchpoint is designed to build trust, making the sale feel like a natural conclusion rather than a high-pressure pitch.

Leads (L): How Did They Find You?

From the customer’s eyes:

  • Did I see an ad that actually spoke to my problem?
  • Did a friend refer you and say, “They took good care of us”?
  • Did your Google reviews make me feel safe, or nervous?
  • When I checked other rating sites, did the story match?

From their side, this is all about trust and clarity:

  • “Do they really handle problems like mine?”
  • “Do people like me say good things about them?”

If your ads, reviews, and website are about you and not them, they scroll past or call someone else.

Appointments (A): Is it Easy to Get on Your Schedule?

Once they decide to reach out:

  • Was it easy to find your phone number or form?
  • When they called, did someone answer… or did it go to voicemail?
  • If they left a message, how fast did someone get back to them?
  • Did they have to chase you, or did you make booking simple?
  • Were they forced to drive to your location for something that could’ve been done over the phone?

Every minute a lead sits unanswered, your chances of getting the job drop. From their side, it looks like:

  • “If they can’t call me back, how will they handle my project?”

This is where fast response, a simple script, and confirmations turn interest into a real spot on your calendar.

Presentations (P): Do They Feel Understood?

Now they meet you or your team.

In their head, they’re asking:

  • “Do they understand why I want this?”
  • “Did they listen to what matters to me?”
  • “Are the options clear, or am I more confused than when I started?”
  • “Are they just talking about themselves and their company?”

If your team:

  • Talks mostly about how great you are
  • Drowns them in features
  • Or throws 7–8 options and prices at them…

…they don’t feel understood. They feel overwhelmed.

A good Presentation from the customer’s perspective:

  • Starts with their “why”
  • Plays back what you heard
  • Shows a few clear options tied directly to what they said they care about

They should leave thinking: “They get me. I can see exactly how this will fix my problem.”

Sales (S): Do They Feel Good About Saying Yes?

Right before they sign or approve:

  • “Will I regret this?”
  • “Can I actually afford this?”
  • “What happens if something goes wrong?”
  • “Do I feel pressured, or confident?”

From their point of view, this is where:

  • Too many options cause indecision
  • Lack of payment choices kills the deal
  • No clear guarantee makes them nervous

Simple, customer‑friendly Sales from their side:

  • 2–3 clear package options (good / better / best)
  • Straightforward payment options (pay in full, card, or financing)
  • A believable guarantee or warranty that shows you stand behind the work

If you do this right, they don’t just buy. They feel good about buying.

Advocacy: Would They Tell a Friend?

The journey doesn’t end when money hits your account.

In their head, after everything is done:

  • “Did they do what they said they’d do?”
  • “Was it easy to work with them?”
  • “If something went wrong, did they fix it?”
  • “Would I put my name on the line and refer them?”

If yes, they:

  • Come back
  • Refer friends and family
  • Leave reviews that power your Leads all over again

If no, they quietly disappear… or loudly warn others.

Why this matters

You understand your operations. The customer only experiences your LAPS journey:

  1. How they first see you (Leads)
  2. How easy you make it to talk to you (Appointments)
  3. How clearly you understand and guide them (Presentations)
  4. How safe and confident they feel saying yes (Sales)

If any one of those steps feels confusing, slow, or risky from their perspective, money leaks out of your business.
