The 6‑Phase Home Services Customer Journey Map

Most trades businesses focus only on the “sales” call. We look at the entire 6‑phase experience to turn strangers into loyal customers and every job into a referral machine.

Built for owners of home‑service and trades businesses with small crews (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, pest, windows, etc.).

The Roadmap to a Frictionless Customer Experience

Your customers don’t experience your business as “marketing” and “sales.” They experience a journey, from the moment they first notice a problem to the moment they decide whether to review you, refer you, or forget you.

This 6‑phase Home Services Customer Journey Map shows that entire path: Awareness, Consideration, Inquiry / Lead, Appointment / Assessment, Presentation / Purchase, and Fulfillment & Advocacy. We use it to spot where trust breaks down, where friction creeps in, and where money and referrals quietly leak out, so you know which phase to improve first.

Journey Map Phase Definitions (Text Version)

Phase 1 – Awareness: “Something’s wrong.”
How the homeowner first notices a problem and starts looking for answers.
Examples: AC not cooling, stains on ceilings, peeling paint, foggy windows, strange noises. They feel annoyed, a bit stressed, and start wondering how serious and how expensive this will be.

Phase 2 – Consideration: “Who should I call?”
When they research options and decide who looks trustworthy enough to contact.
Examples: Google search, checking Google reviews, asking in local Facebook groups, talking to friends and neighbors, clicking around websites. This is where your Google Business Profile, website, photos, and reviews either make you the obvious choice or invisible.

Phase 3 – Inquiry / Lead: “Let me reach out.”
When they actually contact your business for the first time.
Examples: Phone calls, web forms, texts, DMs, or walk‑ins. This is where speed‑to‑lead, answering the phone, and a simple booking process determine whether that interest becomes a real appointment.

Phase 4 – Appointment / Assessment: “Come look at this.”
When your tech or estimator shows up and experiences the home.
Examples: Arrival time, call‑ahead texts, how the tech introduces themselves, how they explain what’s going on, and how they treat the home. This is where trust is either built or burned before you ever present a quote.

Phase 5 – Presentation / Purchase: “What should I buy?”
When you present options, pricing, and next steps.
Examples: Good / Better / Best offers, how clearly you explain what’s included, how you talk about warranties and guarantees, and what payment options you offer. Confusing quotes make people freeze; clear options make it easy to say “yes.”

Phase 6 – Fulfillment & Advocacy: “Was it worth it, and will I tell others?”
What happens after the job is done and how customers remember you.
Examples: Quality of the work, cleanup, final walkthrough, thank‑you, review request, and follow‑up. This phase decides whether you get reviews, referrals, and repeat work, or just a paid invoice and a forgotten name.

Watch: How to Map Your Customer’s Path to Profit

In this short breakdown, I walk you through the 6‑phase Home Services Customer Journey, from “something’s wrong” to “remember, review, refer”, and show you where most trades businesses are quietly losing customers before and after the sales call.

Once you see the full journey, the next step is to measure which money stage is weakest. That’s what the LAPS Revenue Diagnostic does.

Client Testimonials

"We honestly had no idea how to price our services. Every quote felt like a guess, so we undercharged just to win the work and then complained about ‘low margins’ later. Jeff helped us break down our real costs, build a simple pricing structure, and package our offers so they were easy for customers to understand. Within a couple of months we were charging properly, closing at higher prices than before, and finally seeing profit left over at the end of the month."
Jason (Renovation/Construction)
"We were stuck at 64% capacity and guessing what to fix. Jeff helped us understand our enrollment pipeline, improve how we handled inquiries, and present our programs more clearly. The next school year we were full with a wait list and far less stress on our admin team."
Marcie (Private School)
“We had no idea how much money our pricing and offers were leaving on the table. Jeff helped us rework our packages and how we talk about them. We didn’t change our costs, but profit margin is up 38%, rebook rate is up 41%, and we finally feel like we’re running a business instead of just taking pictures.”

FAQ

Every project is scoped so it has a clear path to paying for itself, usually by increasing profit per day within 90 days. On the Diagnostic, we’ll walk through your numbers together and I’ll only recommend a project if I can clearly show you where the return is likely to come from.

That’s normal. Most owners I talk to don’t have perfect reports or dashboards. On the Diagnostic, we start with whatever you do have (invoices, booking software, Google Business Profile, bank deposits) and back into simple LAPS numbers: leads, appointments, presentations, and sales. Part of the value is helping you finally see your numbers clearly. That’s why we start with the Diagnostic.

No. I work with owners in Orlando in person and with businesses across the U.S. remotely over Zoom. The Diagnostic, implementation plans, and follow‑up can all be done online. If you’re near Orlando and want in‑person work, we can do that too. Either way, we start with the same Diagnostic.

The core Diagnostic usually takes about 60–90 minutes. In that time, we map out your LAPS pipeline, find the biggest bottleneck, and outline a 90‑day plan. Some owners choose to do a short follow‑up session to review numbers after a few weeks. Either way, it all starts with that first Diagnostic call.

If you feel the Diagnostic didn’t clearly show you where your pipeline is leaking or what to do next, tell me at the end of the call. I’ll either redo it with you or you won’t pay for it. On top of that, you still keep the free physical copy of $100M Money Models so you walk away with a proven playbook either way

Up front, you’ll invest about 60–90 minutes for the Diagnostic and a bit of time pulling basic info (recent jobs, rough lead counts, etc). After that, implementation time depends on the bottleneck we find, but we focus on a few high‑leverage changes instead of dumping a 50‑item to‑do list on you. That’s why we start with the Diagnostic instead of a generic program.

I’m best suited for owner‑operated service businesses doing roughly $250k–$3M/year in revenue that rely on leads, appointments, and quotes to make sales. If you’re close to that range and want more predictable revenue and profit, the Diagnostic will still help you see what to fix first.

No one honest can guarantee a specific dollar amount, because your market, team, and implementation all matter. What I do guarantee is that we’ll identify a clear bottleneck and give you a practical plan to improve it. If you don’t feel the Diagnostic delivered that, you won’t pay, and you still keep your book. Strong guarantees reduce the risk for you and force me to focus on results.
