You’ve done the hard work: you generated the Lead, booked the Appointment, and delivered a professional Presentation. But in the LAPS framework, none of that matters if you can’t cross the finish line at the Sales (S) stage.
I’m Jeff Secrease, and through Trades Revenue Diagnostics, I see too many Florida trade owners leave money on the table because of fixable friction at the point of purchase. You aren’t just selling a repair; you are selling the certainty that the job will be done right. If your customers are walking away after a ‘great’ presentation, it’s because your sales process is missing the final psychological triggers they need to say ‘yes’.
Now you’re at the final step of LAPS:
All the work up to this point is for this moment:
Do they buy… or walk?
Most owners think “we gave the quote, they’ll either say yes or no.”
In reality, a lot of “nos” are caused by a few fixable mistakes in the Sales phase.
Let’s fix those.
Why the “Take It or Leave It” Quote is a Broken Model
❌ When it’s broken: You provide a single price or overwhelming options (7+), offer no financing, and leave the customer feeling uncertain. This creates an “Awareness Failure” where they don’t understand the value of the solution.
✅ When it works: You present a Good/Better/Best menu, offer clear monthly payment options, and anchor the deal with a believable guarantee. This aligns with the Strategic Guest Journey, making the “Purchase” phase feel safe and professional.
Mistake 1: Analysis Paralysis: Why 3 Options Beat 7 Every Time
On paper, giving 7–8 options feels generous.
“In case they don’t like this, we’ve got that…”
In practice, after three options, most people’s brains start to melt:
- They can’t tell what’s best
- They’re afraid of picking the “wrong” one
- They default to “let me think about it”
Indecision is your biggest competitor.
A better structure:
- Good – basic option that solves the core problem
- Better – improved version with some extras most people want
- Best – premium version for the people who want everything
Three clear choices. That’s it.
You can still customize within those buckets, but the buyer’s brain understands the map.
This is even more important for high ticket work (HVAC, roofing, big projects). The last thing you want is eight different prices on one piece of paper.
Now you’re bleeding out in the Appointment stage.
Mistake 2: The “Fee” Fallacy: Why Missing Payment Options Costs You More Than Credit Card Fees
Every payment method has pros and cons:
- Credit cards – You pay fees, but they increase average ticket because people can spread payments.
- Checks – No processing fee, but they can bounce and slow cash.
- Buy Now, Pay Later / Financing – Costs you a bit more, but often the only way some customers can afford a $5,000–$20,000 job.
Owners get stuck on “I don’t want to pay the fee” and forget the bigger math:
- 3–5% fee on a sale you win
vs - 0% fee on a sale you never get
If a financing option lets a homeowner say “yes” today instead of walking to your competitor, that small fee is the cost of winning the job.
Your job in the Sales phase:
- Offer 1–2 simple payment options on every quote
- Make sure each option is explained in plain English
- Only talk details they actually care about (monthly payment, interest, total)
Mistake 3: Low Peace of Mind: Building Authority with Real Guarantees
Right before they sign, what’s running through their head?
- “What if this doesn’t work?”
- “What if they disappear after I pay?”
- “What if something breaks in 6 months?”
That’s where guarantees and warranties come in.
For high-ticket services (HVAC, roofing, major projects):
- A clear warranty on parts and labor
- Plus a simple, believable guarantee that shows you stand behind your work
Examples:
- HVAC: “2 years of free maintenance included”
- Roofing: “If your roof leaks in any area we replaced within 12 months due to our workmanship, we’ll come back and fix it at no charge.”
- Renovation: “We guarantee a clean, safe work site and proactive updates. If we leave your home messy overnight or miss a scheduled update, we’ll send a cleaner within 24 hours at our expense.”
- Electrical: “All our work is done to current code and inspected by a licensed electrician. If any work we perform fails inspection or causes an issue due to our workmanship within 12 months, we fix it free.”
- Pest Service: “If you see target pests in your home between scheduled services, we’ll come back and re‑treat those areas at no extra charge.”
Key point:
The guarantee should be high value to them, low cost to you and operationally realistic.
They’re not buying metal boxes or shingles. They’re buying feeling safe about the result.
Mistake 4: The Knowledge Gap: Training Your Team to Close the Loop
Huge hidden leak:
- You offer financing, but techs don’t know how to explain it or submit the app
- You accept multiple payment methods, but no one in the field knows the steps
- Office and field say different things about what’s included
Result: awkward conversations, stalled decisions, lost sales.
Fix it with:
- Simple to follow scripts in the sales process.
- Practice these scripts so they are memorized.
- Clear cheat sheets for techs / salespeople:
- “Here’s how financing works, here’s how to apply, here’s what to say”
- Simple one‑page explainer for customers:
- “Option 1: Pay in full. Option 2: Monthly payment. Here’s the difference.”
If your team doesn’t fully understand your options, your customers definitely don’t.
How this fits into LAPS
If you:
- Get leads,
- Book appointments,
- Present clearly…
…but still don’t see enough “yes” at the end, your Sales step is leaking.
When you simplify options, offer smart payment methods, add real guarantees, and train your team, you:
- Increase close rates
- Increase average ticket
- Make your marketing dollars work harder
